Comedian George Wallace, the headliner at the Flamingo, offered a new joke proclaiming O.J. Simpson’s obvious innocence on the grounds that everybody knows the man uses knives, not guns. It was tasteless. But I laughed. That is why I went to see a comic last night. After a few days on the O.J. Simpson story, it felt good to be back in a showroom on the Strip.

George Wallace steps out on stage, shiny suit, hat and big ring on his finger and invites everyone to have a good time. And for the next 90 minutes, Wallace delivers on the invitation, keeping the audience laughing with his infectious humor.

The George Wallace Show has been in town a little over two years, and it just keeps getting better. Wallace is even more comfortable now with Las Vegas audiences than ever before. He evaluates and adjusts to the audience as he goes. If you go and see shows on back-to-back nights you’re likely to see 75% different material each time.

George Wallace gets laughs out of the horrible things that happen in the news and the typical things that happen at McDonald’s. There are certain things, such as being from the South, his love of gospel, which Wallace covers in his act – most of the time. But his real genius is for playing off of others, as when audience members are brought on stage to receive gifts. His “Where are you from?” questioning frequently gives Wallace opportunities to show off a staggering knowledge of geography with a sometimes remarkably specific barb or comment. Is there anywhere he hasn’t been?

Who knew that someday this “Mr. Las Vegas” title might be contested? It’s been Wayne Newton’s nickname for years, whenever he’s not called “The Midnight Idol” or simply “The Wayner.” But it’s a title now starting to wear just as well with comedian George Wallace, Newton’s current roommate in the Flamingo’s old-Vegas showroom.

One of the standard comments we hear from visitors to Las Vegas is that George Wallace [Flamingo Las Vegas, 702.733.3333] delivers a bargain. He’s very earnest about giving his audience a rollicking good time, and he knows exactly how to draw the maximum laughter from his material, which is aimed squarely at the common man and woman. There is very little Wallace won’t do to make an audience laugh. He pokes fun at the audience and gets everyone participating in his act.

Oh man. I love you, George Wallace. I was in Las Vegas two weeks ago – I witnessed a woman jumping out of magician Lance Burton’s stomach and I saw David Copperfield impregnate another without physical contact. But even that couldn’t prepare me for a front-row seat at George’s show. “We’re gonna have a good time!” he roared, voice booming with the thunderous energy of the mighty Thor. Well, you were right.
